Resurrected against his will by a sect of Gladien worshippers, Dergos the Red came back wrong. His flesh fused to his armor; his right hand did not regenerate at all. In his pain and grief, the once-paladin released a surge of energy that destroyed the chapel-- and gave rise to the beginnings of the Red Plague.
Dergos allowed the Red Plague to continue his spread, even harnessed its power for himself. Turned loose on the world of the living, it caused mortal creatures the kind of suffering he felt. He will stop at nothing to continue his revenge. Adventurers, the foolish children that they are, will not give him pause. Nothing will, until every living soul on the island, everything that once bathed in Gladien's light, has turned red.
Biography
Origins
The story goes that Dergos the Red was one of a small group of valiant knights who once overthrew Rhimval's mad king, freeing the land from the grip of tyranny. A core of truth lies in this legend, though like all history, it's far more nuanced and complex than simple good and evil. Still, what Dergos and his compatriots did was an ultimate good. Gladien's believers would often cite this event as a prime example of light triumphing over darkness, to the point he became something of an unofficial saint.
Return
It was awfully convenient that a Gladien chapel was built over the catacombs that housed Dergos' remains. The particular sect in that town developed a rather extreme belief system: that not only was death the ultimate evil to be vanquished, but they should begin by resurrecting their heroes. Flesh and blood. Unlike the necromancy that Grim practices, in two-way communion with the spirits beyond, these devotees had no care for what Dergos would want.
None were left alive.
Now
The survivors in the community near the old chapel have conflicting stories of what happened that day. The only consistent throughline is a flash of red, an explosion, and an armored man silhouetted against the carnage. The Red Plague has slowly spread across the land ever since then, but such a lack of consistency makes for a frustrating number of dead ends in any search for its origin. Even if they get past those dead ends, Dergos has seen to it that no one finds the truth.
Of course, he's yet to meet someone else who can defy death.
