Alexander Peabody

The co-proprietor of the Necropolis Ltd. Alex has something of a misanthropic streak, which is why he deals with very little customer-facing business. His eccentricities are apparent the second you walk into his office: a collection of replica flintlock pistols and muskets, a fax machine that seemingly hasn't been replaced since the '80s, a mysterious locked safe covered in years' worth of dust. Though he's stubborn as a mule and hotheaded as a warhorse, Alex is also deeply kind to his allies, friends, and loved ones.

Alex's description might stop there if you know nothing else about him. If you haven't seen the seam on his neck, if you haven't heard him whistle for his ghostly steed, if he hasn't told you how old he really is, you might think Alexander Peabody is just a history-loving technophobe with a strange accent. The truth of the matter is, he and Lewis are psychopomps and exorcists, a horseman and a train conductor who travel between worlds.

Biography

Early Years

There's an old ghost story floating around, of a highwayman who cut the wrong man's purse strings one night, on the wrong back road. Figuring a musket ball was too good an end for such a thief, the man's cronies killed the highwayman's horse, dragged him to a stump, and chopped his head off. It's said that if you're in the right part of the backwoods, on the right kind of night, you can see him riding past as he continues to search for his head.

Or at least you could, until sightings slowed to a halt in the late 1990s. These days the story has been mostly obscured by more popular fare-- witches, cryptids and so on. Alex prefers it that way. After all, there's no more need to search for what has been found.
